Marketing is a great profession. It offers the opportunity to be endlessly creative and is always evolving. Dozens of new tools are developed every year, while trends and opportunities change at lightning speed.

ChiefMartec produces an annual overview of the most important marketing-related tools, divided into advertising, content and management. The numbers are impressive. In 2019, the list contained no fewer than 7,040 tools, and by 2020 there are already 8,000. In 2014 there were 'only' 947 tools on the list.

Obviously, it is impossible to use all these tools, and it is not necessary at all. A limited number is enough for most marketers.

The selection of the right tools is more important than the number of them. And how do you make this choice better than on the recommendation of other marketers?

To help our fellow marketers, we have listed our 10 favourite tools we are using at Groupbuyexpert. We fully believe that every marketer is making huge strides using these tools.

1. Asana

Asana is not only interesting for marketers but all employees within a company. Then why do we put him on the list? Mainly because the structure is indispensable within the marketing profession. And that is exactly what Asana brings.

Asana is a project management tool that makes it extremely easy to be and stay productive together with a team. You can create organized to-do lists per project, per person or per team. Besides, tasks are assigned to people or teams, including sequence (data) and useful tags.

Especially for marketers, Asana has put together a few templates for common projects within the marketing profession. The preliminary to a marketing campaign, for example, or a product marketing launch. With one click (okay, maybe three) on the button, these lists are neatly arranged in your Asana tool. All you have to do is fill in your data, and team members and your project can start.

2. Insightly

While Asana tracks and directs projects and tasks, Insightly does it for data.

Every company has to deal with a lot of contact details of customers, leads and business relations. In a good CRM system such as Insightly, all this data is accurately stored.

A system like Insightly helps marketers store data centrally (and often automatically) instead of separate address books and separate computers. A smart CRM system also helps make analyses, view the turnover, calculate the possible turnover in the coming years, and automate marketing processes. Indispensable for every marketing and sales team.

3. SEMrush

We are making a leap from project management and CRM to websites. One of the main goals of marketers is to increase the online findability of a company. You do this with a good website, smart keyword use and good content.

With SEMrush, your website is designed in such a way that it scores the best on Google. You can do keyword research, manage backlinks, see which pages are viewed well, do an SEO audit and much more. In no time, you have an overview of what you need to change on your website to become more visible on Google.

4. Google Analytics

Do you want to go one step further in analyzing your website? Then Google Analytics is the ideal tool.

Google Analytics automatically stores large amounts of data from your website and provides insight into the behaviour of your website visitors.

By setting up reports yourself, you as a marketer learn who views which page, how long a website visit usually lasts, how visitors end up on the website (via social media, for example) and much more.

When you as a marketer regularly thoroughly review your Analytics reports and make any improvements based on this, you will make a lot of progress in your marketing results.

5. Hotjar

Perhaps a slightly lesser-known tool, but a very nice option to optimize a website is Hotjar

With this great tool, you can see exactly what your website visitors are doing on your website and where they might get stuck. You then respond to this by making the website easier to navigate and by navigating visitors towards (for example) a checkout in smart ways.

How does it work?

Through heat maps and visitor recordings show the Hotjar tool where visitors move through their mouse, where they click, where they enter the site and where they leave again.

You can draw valuable conclusions from this. For example, do you have an e-commerce website, and all your website visitors leave your page from the shopping cart? Then it can be improved. Or do you see your website visitors searching for a long time before they arrive at the page they are looking for? Then you will have to adjust the layout of your website. Valuable web design and UX lessons, from which every marketer can learn a lot.

6. MailChimp

In addition to SEO and good content, email marketing is ideal for creating website traffic and bonding with an audience.

Although almost every marketer probably knows this tool, we cannot ignore it in this list.

Mailchimp is without a doubt the most accessible tool for managing email lists and sending email campaigns. And although the focus is mainly on small (er) companies, most companies are more than satisfied with the functions that Mailchimp offers.

Do you want to collect email addresses via a landing page, website or pop-up screen? Do you want to set up beautiful campaigns and send them automatically at pre-planned times? Do you want to analyze your results and segment your lists for better results? This and much more is possible with Mailchimp.

Setting up an e-mail campaign in MailChimp is done in no time.

7. Buffer

Social media is an important part of almost any marketing strategy. Most companies post an update on their social media channels a few times a week, and strangely enough, this is sometimes done manually. Strangely enough, because this is not necessary at all and takes a lot of time.

With handy tools such as Buffer, you plan in which posts should be shared and when. This way, you only have to sit down for it once, and you can ensure that your social media messages are automatically shared for weeks (or months).

There are actually many good social media scheduling tools, such as Buffer, Hootsuite, CoSchedule and Hubspot. However, are you looking for an affordable and reliable tool for a small (er) business? Then Buffer is a good option.

8. Canva

The Leapforce team prefers to use Canva for beautiful infographics, flyers, posters and social media designs.

With Canva, anyone can put together a nice design without any knowledge of design. The platform lets you cut, paste, slide and even has many templates ready where you only have to paste your own photos for a nice and professional (enough) result.

This Instagram post and logo are, for example, free to use and can be fully decorated with your photos, colours and font:

9. Feedly

For the content marketers, a special favourite from Leapforce, Feedly

Feedly is an RSS reader. This means a simplified representation of certain website texts in a clear feed — based on your interests.

By setting up feeds per topic and linking certain websites and blogs to them, Feedly will automatically display the most relevant blogs in an up-to-date feed. An endless source of content and inspiration, therefore.

Besides feeds, you can also create boards. These are lists of articles that you add manually. Do you come across a good article on any website? Then you can add it to one of your boards with one click on your web extension. A huge solution for any content marketer and the Leapforce team is finding, storing, and sharing content with the team.

10. Zapier

Last but not least, a tool for tools. In a marketing landscape with so many tools, it is sometimes difficult to maintain structure. How do you ensure that all your tools work together optimally?

Zapier helps marketers by seamlessly linking all their tools. By linking various tools to Zapier, you let the tools work together automatically, saving you a lot of time.

A good example, straight from the Zapier website, is a link between Gmail, Dropbox and Slack. Would you like all documents that you receive by email to be stored on Dropbox? This can be done automatically via Zapier. And do you also want to receive a message about this on Slack? This can also be arranged automatically with Zapier.

In other words, fully automated workflows make the jumble of tools for the marketer a lot clearer.
