You see all your turnover in Google Analytics coming in via referral and not via organic search or paid search.

While you know for sure that you will get the most turnover with that. You click on referral and see that all turnover is allocated to payment providers.

As a result, you do not know exactly which effort yields what. And that must therefore be resolved.

In this article, I am going to tell you all about it.

What are Payment Providers?

A payment provider is nothing more than a party that makes digital payment possible. The most famous examples of this are Mollie, Multisafepay and Adyen.

Payment providers then make payment possible via iDeal, Klarna, bank transfer, Bancontact and many other payment options.

In short, no webshop can do without it.

Why are the conversions assigned to the payment providers?

The answer to this question is actually super simple. When you land on a website via Google, Google Analytics sees this as organic traffic.

When you visit a website via a link from another website, Google Analytics sees this as a referral. And if you click on a Google Ads ad, Google sees this as a paid search.

That all makes perfect sense.

If you have landed on a webshop via Google and then want to make the payment, you will be redirected to the payment provider's payment environment.

You then complete the payment, and you will be redirected to the thank you page. Google Analytics will then no longer see that you initially came to the website via Google because you came back via the payment provider's payment environment.

Analytics sees this as two different sessions and therefore says that the turnover comes through the payment provider (i.e. referral) and not through Google.

A step-by-step plan for excluding payment providers in Google Analytics

Fortunately, this problem is not unknown to Google Analytics, and they have come up with something for this: referral exclusions.

Adding payment providers to this list removes them from Analytics and automatically allocates the revenue to the channel that actually triggered the sale.

So you know exactly how well (or badly ...) your campaigns are doing.

And now I'm going to explain step by step how you can exclude a payment provider from Google Analytics:

Step 1: Log in to Google Analytics

Step 2: Click the account and the property where you want to add the referral exclusion.

Step 3: Click on 'administrator' at the bottom left.

Step 4: Click on 'Tracking Info' and then on 'Referral Exclusion List'.

Step 5: Click on the button with '+ add referral exclusion'.

Step 6: enter the payment provider you want to exclude and click on 'create'.

Step 7: Repeat steps 5 and 6 until you have had all payment providers.

Now, of course, you can add the payment providers known to you in the way I explained above. But do you actually know what all payment providers are? I have listed them for you.

List of all payment providers you want to exclude in Google Analytics

I have searched all over the internet to find all the payment providers for you, and I have bundled them into one long list. So that you don't have to find out exactly which payment providers you use:
